Two Events Remembering the Québec Mosque Massacre

EVENT #1

Monday January 29th, 2018 from 7-9pm

Mackintosh-Corry Hall Room B201, Queen’s Campus

On January 29th, 2017, six Muslim men: Abdelkrim Hassane, Azzeddine Soufiane, Aboubaker Thabti, Ibrahima Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, and Mamadou Tanou Barry, were brutally murdered by Alexandre Bissonnette as they stood in prayer at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City. 19 were injured as a result of the shooting.

To mark the one year anniversary of largest mass shooting in Canada since 1989, Muslim Societies, Global Perspectives invites you to attend a panel discussion. Themes to be explored will include: the use of the term terrorism in responding to this event, Islamophobia and state policy as well as understanding this event in relation to alt-right and white nationalist organizing and groups in Canada.

This event will open with a reading from local poet and author Sadiqa de Meijer

Panelists will include:

  • Imam Ryan Carter
  • Dr. Margaret Aziza Pappano, Department of English, Queen’s University
  • Dr. Ariel Salzmann, Department of History, Queen’s University
  • Sayyida Jaffer, community member


A discussion will follow. This event will be moderated by Dr. Adnan Husain.

Islamic Centre of Kingston, 1477 Sydenham Rd

On January 29, 2017, a lone gunman killed six worshippers and injured many others injured during evening prayer at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec.Those whose lives were lost were: Azzeddine Soufiane, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Aboubaker Thabti, Ibrahima Barry and Abdelkrim Hassane

To commemorate the first anniversary of this tragic shooting, we join communities across Canada, to pray for and remember the innocent lives lost and stand in solidarity with the community.

We invite Faith Leaders and Friends to join us on Sunday, January 28 from 5:30 – 6: 30 pm (after Maghrib) at the Islamic Centre of Kingston to pray for and remember the lives lost in the Québec City Mosque Shooting.
