Kingston Local wins Peace History Soc. Award
Congratulations to Kingston’s Geoff Smith on his Lifetime Achievement Award from the Peace History Society. Since 1964, The Peace History Society has supported scholarly research on peace, non-violence and social justice.
Queen’s Professor Emeritus Smith was recognized for his “outstanding scholarship and exemplary service to peace history.”
At Queen’s, Dr. Smith was a very popular professor who taught courses on Conspiracy and Dissent in American History, US Foreign Relations, Latin American History, the Vietnam War, and American Social and Cultural History. The Frank Knox Award for Excellence in Teaching was presented to Dr. Smith in 2004.
Dr. Smith has written widely on issues related to peace history, gender and US national security in the Cold War, the relocation of Japanese minorities in the US and Canada during Second World War, and American nativism. His 1973 monograph, To Save a Nation: American Extremism, the New Deal and the Coming of World War II, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Yes, it’s true that Prof. Smith’s work on ‘peace, non-violence and social justice’ has been none too shabby. I think, however, that his most penetrating insights have been directed at… the basketball court. What I’m hoping is that he’s already working on a next book: ‘Basketball and peace-work: Beyond the arc and into the lane.’ That’s definitely a book I want to read.
Sincere congratulations, Geoff, for your richly-deserved award from the Peace History Society! You may not have been a point guard back in the day…but you’re still pointing the way for the rest of us.
