Islamic History Month in Kingston
Re-posted from our friends at the Islamic Society of Kingston, we felt called to share these events which further address issues of Islamophobia and reconciliation in our region.

For the 11th year in a row, Kingston’s City Council has proclaimed October as Islamic History Month. Inaugurated in 2007, Islamic History Month is a nationwide celebration that seeks to share the history, heritage and culture of Muslims with fellow Canadians.
This year, the theme for the month is: Celebrating Diversity, Honouring Reconciliation. Local events are being organized through the Islamic Society of Kingston (ISK), Muslim Societies, Global Perspectives (MSGP, Queen’s University), Queen’s University Muslim Students’ Association (QUMSA).
The month launches on Sunday, October 1 with ea workshop entitled “Building Inclusivity in the Age of Islamophobia”: a #StrongerTogether workshop with Gilary Massa (Advocacy Coordinator, National Council of Canadian Muslims). On Tuesday, we are hosting Imam Hamid Slimi for a lecture on “Peaceful Coexistence in Islam”.

Building Inclusivity in the Age of Islamophobia: #StrongerTogether – A workshop with Gilary Massa (Advocacy Coordinator, National Council for Canadian Muslims). Location: McLaughlin Room, JDUC, Queen’s University. When: Sunday, October 1st, 2-4 pm.
Peaceful Co-existence in Islam – A lecture by Imam Hamid Slimi (Sayeda Khadija Centre, Mississauga). Location: Botterell Hall B147, Queen’s University (18 Stuart St.). When: Tuesday, October 3rd, 7:30 pm.
The Living Tree: Celebrating Faith, Resiliency and Hope – A lecture by Imam Yasin Dwyer (Muslim Chaplin, Ryerson University; former Muslim Chaplain at Queen’s University). Location: Botterell Hall B147, Queen’s University. When: Friday, October 13th, 7:30 pm.
Tug-of-War – Film screening and discussion hosted by Boona Mohammad (Award-winning Poet, Performer, Activist, Entrepreneur). (tugofwar-movie.com) Location: Kinesiology 101, Queen’s University (28 Division St.). When: Friday, October 20th, 6 pm.
Open House at the Islamic Centre of Kingston – 1477 Sydenham Road (0.5 km N of Hwy 401). Tours of the facility, displays and conversations. When: Sunday, October 22nd, 2-4 pm.

The Holy Fire Miracle: Sovereignty and Christian-Muslim Pieties in Medieval Jerusalem – Lecture by Dr. Adnan Husain (History/MSGP, Queen’s University). Location: Watson Hall 517, Queen’s University. When: Monday, October 23rd, 2:30-4:00 pm.
Reconciliation: Muslim and Indigenous Communities Working Together – Panel discussion with Professor Robert Lovelace (Global Development Studies, Queen’s University) and Asma Maryam Ali (Director and Therapist, Concentric Care, Toronto). Location: Botterell B147, Queen’s University (18 Stuart St.). When: Thursday, October 26, 7:30 pm.
iSPEAK Challenge Youth Speech Competition – Come hear Kingston’s Muslim youth talent speak about the history of Islam and Muslims. Location: Islamic Centre of Kingston. When: Friday, October 27, 7 pm.
