PeaceQuest KW Dec. Minutes

Meeting began at 7:00pm on Dec 7th, 2014

  • People for Emily to contact:
    • Ian Stump from the School for Nonviolent Direct Action
    • Matthew Albrecht- Organizer of Nonviolent Humanist League
    • Matthew Bailey-Dyck- Grebel sessional professor, tried to get a group going previously
    • Josie Winterfeld from Stirling Mennonite
    • New mayor Dave Jaworksky- maybe get connected through Brenda, as Emily met with her 2 months ago
    • Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic
  • Peace Organizations to check out
    • Educators for Justice- provide resources to Catholic School
    • Camp Mica- they do leadership camps about peace and justice
    • Conscience Canada- help people defer taxes from military spending
      • Also have stories of conscientious objectors, collections of personal stories
    • Christian Peacemaking Teams- honouring peacemaking heritage and WWI resistors
    • Veterans for Peace
  • Possible future events/initiatives
    • Alternative Remembrance Day services
    • Advocate for small arms treaty.
      • Why is Canada not ratifying? Because selling arms is good for business
    • Movie series
      • Could be at Kitchener library movie room or Princess Cinema
      • Could get suggestions of films from the Nonviolence film festival people (Allbrecht)
    • Speaker series
    • Being a coordinating presence in KW
      • We could have a newsletter or some kind of online posting board where peace and justice groups’ events and initiatives can be posted.
      • There are a lot of people passionate about peace and social justice, but not always coordinated.
      • Could be a newsletter sent out, or a page on the PeaceQuest website
    • Peace, Pies, and Profit- fundraiser for Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) that happens at Grebel. There are skits and raffling pies
      • We can ask Grebel if it is happening and how we can partner with that event
    • Theatre of the Beat- they have social justice plays, such as Gadfly, which is about Sam Steiner who resisted the draft
      • We could talk to them about doing another show, either a replay of Gadfly or something different
    • Educators for Justice could be a potential funder
    • Federal election coming up
      • Looks like it won’t be until after May 1st
      • We can gather talking points and make questions for candidates that highlight peace issues on the political debates
    • Housekeeping
      • We would like to have somewhere that we can discuss PeaceQuest things virtually. Maybe a discussion board or email thread
        • Emily will look into it
        • Edmodo is a possibility
      • Next meeting will be January 11th at 7pm in the Fretz Seminar room in the CPA.
