Image of British and German soldiers talking on an empty battlefield. From Illustrated children’s book “Silent Night, Holy Night” by Robert T Barrett
This unique event blends meditation, song, poetry and film in remembrance of the spontaneous Christmas truce of 1914.
War propaganda was urging soldiers to believe they were fighting monsters. Yet on that winter morning they recognized their common humanity. The shooting stopped. Soldiers swapped cap badges. They shared food and drink and played soccer. They organized joint religious services. They showed each other photos of their loved ones. The high command was appalled.
