The war in Syria rages on and on and recently was escalated on April 6th when the United States launched a missile attack on a Syrian air base. This action by President Trump was endorsed by Prime Minister Trudeau. This attack occurred precisely at a time when negotiators from both the government and some of the ‘rebel’ sides are in Geneva attempting to achieve a political solution to end the six-year long conflict. This attack increases the possibility of a direct military confrontation between the United States and the Russian Federation which could ignite a much wider regional conflict and even nuclear war.
Regina’s three peace groups urge Canada to distance itself from U.S. war-making policies; to search for a lasting political solution to the conflict in Syria; end its economic sanctions against Syria; re-establish diplomatic relations with Damascus and Tehran; stop arming the terrorists in Syria; and cancel its $15 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia.
